Volusia County has over a hundred artificial reefs and miles of natural reefs and ledges. It's popular with boaters and divers from all over. This area was the first location where ScubaViz.us prototyped the use of the KD490 image for diver visibility.

The MODIS insterment on the AQUA satellite is broken so a k490noaa products are not available. There isn't a timeline on if or when it will be working again. For now use SENTINEL OLCI for water clarity information. Keep in mind the color scale is different than what was used on MODIS. Green, blue and purple are all considered good water clarity.

KD 490 is a surrogate for water clarity. The lower the value the clearer the water. White areas are grater than a .2 and would be considered very murky water. Black areas have no data or value less than .02. In most cases it is no data caused by cloud cover.

This satellite data product is updated daily at 3am EST. It is a composite of satellite images from the previous afternoon. If there are clouds on some of the images or the SST is changing significantly during the day it may result in unusual anomalies in the image.
